There are currently several different versions of Windows 10 available, which is great as it provides you with options. However, it can be a little challenging to determine which edition best fits your business needs. To help you make an informed decision, here's a quick rundown of some of the key differences between the versions.
Home is the basic variant of Windows While it is basic, it comes chock full of new features compared to earlier versions like the revamped Start Menu, which users sorely missed in Windows 8. Cortana, the digital voice assistant previously exclusive for Windows phones, has also been integrated into the new OS allowing for a better search experience. In addition to those, the Home edition also features new security upgrades like Trusted Platform Module TPM support, a microchip that offers additional security functions; Microsoft Passport; and a new biometric login feature by Windows Hello.
The new OS also lets users take advantage of Virtual Desktops and the Snap Assist feature, allowing them to view four apps on the screen simultaneously. As you would expect, Windows 10 Pro has all the new features of the Home edition but is packed with some extras that are tailored for small businesses. These include major security features like Bitlocker and Assigned Access 8. Bitlocker is a powerful disk encryption tool that lets users encrypt external flash drives.
It also has smart functions like pre-addressing emails and other small timesaving tricks that make the workday a little smoother.
With many staff taking work home after hours, commuting or otherwise switching between mobile and desktop devices, continuity can be a challenge. A benefit of Windows 10 is that employees can now transition seamlessly between devices while working on a single file using OneDrive. In addition, the Timeline feature helps those who work more linearly. A simple scroll back through a chronological list of accessed files can help locate information quickly.
Files can be stored in Files On-Demand, which removes the documents from the computer storage and keeps them solely in OneDrive. They can be recalled at any time without the associated slower processing speeds of a laden drive. Microsoft operating systems have functioned on large scale upgrades for many years. Each new release was monumental and often bought significant improvements to security and user experience.
Microsoft has always charged users to access these upgrades. Over time competitors have offered upgrades as a regular and free service that forms part of the experience of purchasing the device itself. In the majority, social expectations have changed and consumer appetite for paid upgrades has diminished. In this light, Microsoft has also changed its approach. Upgrades will be rolled out as they are created.
Lower tier versions of Windows 10 will have automatic upgrades and security patches deployed while Enterprise teams will have the option to delay some upgrades if specific isolated devices require a stable environment.
Enterprise licenses and Software Assurance support fees will continue to apply to those users. The change will mean different things to different IT teams. Some will need to watch out for automatic updates being put upon them with little control about the timing of the implementation.
Given that deploying a brand-new OS across a business can be time-consuming, expensive and disruptive the gradual rolling upgrades should be a benefit to most. The incremental changes will reduce staff training requirements while increasing security and delivering functionality and productivity upgrades in a timely manner.
Instead of entirely new OS version implementation, there will be three types of update that IT teams need to be across. Quality updates will come through on a monthly basis. These will be delivered through Windows Update. Microsoft is planning to launch Windows Store for Business, an app store designed to make it easier for firms to deploy apps to staff.
Organisations will be able to create private sections of the Windows Store that offer a bespoke list of pre-approved apps, and admins will be able to assign apps to specific employees. Businesses will also be able to acquire apps in bulk. Users will sign in via the Azure Active Directory. Microsoft is integrating Azure AD with Windows more deeply to reduce the amount of passwords users need to remember. The same devices can be automatically enrolled in a mobile device management service at the same time.
Users will also be able to gain single sign-on access to in-house services from personal Windows devices by linking that Windows machine to a work account managed with Azure Active Directory. It is designed to help enterprises set up and run virtual Windows desktops and applications, to manage Windows users with features such as encryption and to recover systems more rapidly. For work devices that are not mission-critical but which require a bit more control over updates than consumer machines, there is the Current branch for Business CBB update path.
This option allows PCs to receive feature updates several months after they have been pushed to consumer versions of Windows 10, allowing additional time to validate their quality and application compatibility. Security updates will be delivered as normal. This feature allows IT managers to customize and lock down the user interface of a Windows device to restrict the machine to performing a specific task, such as acting as a check-in kiosk at an airport.
Old corporate intranet sites will often not render or behave as intended in more recent browsers. It allows newer browser features that could cause errors to be disabled, such as tab-switching, and provides tools for management and monitoring of compatibility. As in Windows 8. Basing encryption on the password is designed to make it both simple for users to log in and use the system, while stopping a malicious third party from accessing the data.
Like earlier Windows operating systems, Windows 10 physical and virtual machines and devices can be managed using Group Policy settings, which allow IT professionals to configure user and computers across the business.
Microsoft says Group Policy settings offer more that 30, ways to configure machines and devices. Application-vetting and biometric authentication, are key new security features in Windows 10 that will secure enterprise information. It is intended to block any applications that are not signed by specific software vendors, the Windows app store, and an enterprise itself. Windows Hello uses biometrics such as a scan of your fingerprint or your eye to launch Windows 10 devices, and the Passport feature lets enterprise users enter Websites, networks, and applications without passwords.
Users merely confirm with Windows 10 that they are in possession of their device via biometric scan in order to automatically access a variety of services and websites like email, social networks, and e-commerce pages.
